Denial and Danger
Carissa moaned at the sound of her phone alarm. It took her a moment to recall she was still at her parentsâ home. She had a longer trek to work today than she usually had. At least sheâd woken up with plenty of time.
Carissa stretched out her arms and rose from the bed. She dragged her feet on the glossy wood floor to the closet. Her old clothes may not gather dust in the Otherworld, nothing ever did here, but theyâd certainly gone out of style. It didnât matter much. Most of Moss Hill was out of sync with the rest of the worldâs latest trends. She would change before Helaâs and Fenâs engagement dinner anyway. She picked out a cute pink top and jeans.
âChaos,â she sang out, âTime to wake up.â She didnât look to see if the faerie had listened. Instead, she walked to the outdoor area where a stream of water was sectioned off behind an intricate wood laced fence covered in flowers to serve as a private bathing area. Nature mixed with a little magic did what technology could for the human world and both were beautiful to Carissa. Yet being here brought out her fae side and she relaxed into her otherworldly nature, singing as she bathed, dressed, and walked with a little more rhythm in her steps as she headed back indoors. Her senses were heightened now and she could hear the fluttering of birds and butterflies in the garden. She turned. It wouldnât hurt to take a little time to gaze out on the splendor of Mount Vale.
She ran and leaped over the partition and back down on the other side. Her fae nature allowed her to glide along the thin wood. She came to rest on a set of boulders where the water flowed from a meek waterfall into the pond that came to rest in the center circle of her parentsâ patio. Rather than facing the pond, she watched the trees swaying in the gentle morning breeze and listened to their song. Footsteps approached before long.
âThought I might find you here,â Father said. Dressed and ready for the day, and apparently helping with the cooking, he draped a terrycloth kitchen towel over his shoulder and leaped to join her on the stone. âStill your favorite spot in the world?â
She smiled and linked her arm through the crook of his elbow. âAlways.â She rested her head on his shoulder. They didnât linger long.
âBreakfast is ready,â her father said. Then he kissed her forehead and the two clamored down to race along the path of pavers that led to the kitchen.
âMorning, Ma,â Carissa said. She closed her eyes and inhaled the scent of fresh bread and berry jam.
Her father waved a plate under her nose. âBetter take some before itâs all gone.â She eagerly snatched at the food on the table. Cari bit into the warm buttery bread, fluffy and moist, and savored the taste.
âWhereâs Chaos?â Carissa asked between bites. She noticed the absence of the chiming sound and the quick fluttering light.
